ความสำคัญของการขนส่งสินค้าทางทะเล ลักษณะและการดำเนินงานโดยรวมของธุรกิจพาณิชย์นาวี นับตั้งแต่ประเภทของเรือที่ใช้ในธุรกิจพาณิชย์นาวี เช่น เรือขนส่งทางแม่น้ำ ทางทะเล และธุรกิจที่เกี่ยวเนื่อง เช่น การประกันภัยทางทะเล ทำให้ผู้เรียนมีความเข้าใจในหลักการ และทฤษฎีพื้นฐานด้านพาณิชยนาวี นอกจากนี้ ยังศึกษารูปแบบองค์กร การจัดองค์กรที่สนับสนุนการขนส่งทางน้ำ รวมทั้งศึกษาถึงขั้นตอนการขนส่งทางแม่น้ำ และทางทะเล นับตั้งแต่การจองระวางเรือ การคิดค่าระวาง รวมถึงความปลอดภัยด้านการขนส่งทางน้ำ
